"Richard's course on Teaching Yoga for Dementia offered great practical advice on delivering a chair yoga session and how to connect with participants. He explained how yoga can help those living with dementia keep active and release the stress and anxiety that can build up"
Caroline Smart, Attendee, Teaching Yoga for Dementia Dec 2021
This workshop discusses the experience of living with Dementia and how this is a Public Health challenge of our age. Life with Dementia can be disorientating and frightening; it impacts on confidence and independence.
We will learn to understand the condition and how we can help through a dementia friends information session.
We will examine a working model and how yoga can help those directly involved and the practices which help alleviate the symptoms and reduce anxiety. We will explore the benefits of yoga for this population and how it can be used to help promote a feeling of well-being and also the vital role of carers.
The workshop includes an experiential yoga practice tailored for people with Dementia.
Yoga and meditation practices can be hugely beneficial to the dementia community. In this training you will discover how to use yoga to help your students with:
- Cognition: Yoga can help with improving mental function - learning and memory
- Stress and anxiety caused by dementia - through movement and breathwork practices suitable for this group
- Depression: techniques which can help those with this condition who also experience depression
- Sense of location in space: yoga practices to help with spacial awareness and proprioception
- Loneliness and lack of social relationships: creating a non judgemental space for activity with others
- Other mental and physical issues which may sit alongside dementia: yoga practices which are appropriate for other challenges
You will also learn which practices are not appropriate and what circumstances yoga is not appropriate for this group and risk factors. You will discover how to deal with challenging circumstances that can occur when teaching this demographic: the expression of anger & fear
